The Tale of Dongfanghong

The story of Dongfanghong Dancong stretches over 600 years, linking the Southern Song imperial era to modern history. Far more than just tea, it bears witness to the passage of time.

Legendary Origin: The Song Imperial Gift – “Songzhong”

The tale dates back to the late Southern Song Dynasty (around 1278). Legend records that Emperor Zhao Bing fled south and passed through Fenghuang Mountain in Chaozhou. Stricken with thirst, he was served an infusion brewed from leaves shaped like bird beaks. The tea quenched his thirst and refreshed him, earning it the imperial title “Song Tea”, later known as “Songzhong (Song Bush)”.

Marks of Time: From “Rock Treasure” to “Dongfanghong”

This ancient tea tree carried different names through centuries:

• Rock Treasure (Yanshangzhen): Named for its mother tree rooted amid boulders, its roots twisting around massive stones.

• Militia Tea / High-Yield Tea: Titles used in the early days of New China and the Great Leap Forward era.

• Dongfanghong (The East Is Red): The definitive name, rooted in authentic modern history.
